PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A pair of goals by Skidmore's Emily Saliterman over a span of 70 seconds in the first half proved to be too much for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team to overcome as the Cardinals dropped a 2-0 decision to the Thoroughbreds at the Field House Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
As a result of the non-conference setback, Plattsburgh State falls to 1-5-1 while Skidmore keeps their 2013 record untarnished at 5-0-1.
Once again, the Cardinals came out intent on forcing the issue on the offensive end. Senior Emily LaLone attempted the first of two Plattsburgh State corner kicks just 5:33 into the match before senior Lauren Gonyea took the Cardinals' first shot of the afternoon.
Playing on the front line instead of her usual posting in the defensive grouping, the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product sent a hard shot at Skidmore keeper Gab Lawrence (5-0-1) at the 7:29 mark of the initial frame.
Saliterman helped the Thoroughbreds hit pay dirt for the first time at the 29:19 mark of the first half. Having received a pass from Morgan Governale, Saliterman let a high arcing shot fly off of her foot. The ball found its way into the back of the Cardinals' net despite a leaping save attempt by Charisse Abellard (1-4-1).
With 30:29 gone in the tilt, Saliterman raced past Plattsburgh State's back line and sent a shot to the far left corner of Plattsburgh State's net and past a diving Abellard to account for the final margin. Jenna Spooner assisted on Saliterman's third tally of the season.
Scoring opportunities of any kind were hard for the Cardinals to come by, but freshman Diana DiCocco tried her best to cut Skidmore's lead in half during the waning seconds of the bout. The Schenectady, N.Y., native sprinted past the entire Skidmore defensive line and sent a shot at backup keeper Madison Plummer that sailed just wide late in the 89th minute.
Through the 90-minute game, the Cardinals enjoyed a 10-9 advantage in shots over the visitors, forcing the Skidmore goalkeeping tandem to make five stops. Abellard came up with one save before surrendering netminder duties to Kristy Kirkpatrick for the final 30:53.
Gonyea and sophomore Melissa Rodriguez each sent two shots at the Skidmore net during the match.
The Cardinals will enjoy a short hiatus before competing under the lights at the Field House Complex for the first time in 2013 on Tuesday night. Plattsburgh State welcomes North Country rival Clarkson to town for a 7 p.m. non-conference bout.
