Men's Soccer Silenced in 2-0 Loss to Skidmore

Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season to Skidmore as the Cardinals found themselves on the losing end of a 2-0 decision in a non-conference game at the Field House Turf Complex.

The Cardinals' offense was stymied Saturday afternoon as Plattsburgh State only had five shots on goal despite outshooting the Thoroughbreds by a 15-5 margin. Plattsburgh State also edged Skidmore, 8-2, in corner kicks.

Skidmore (4-3-1) grabbed an early lead at the 6:20 mark of the first half when Adam Beek scored on a free kick from the top of the box to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead. The visitors threatened again later in the half when Nick Martinelli attempted to tap the ball past Plattsburgh State goalkeeper John Toper from in close, but a diving Toper was able to get a hand on it and knock the ball away to keep it a one-goal game going into halftime.

The Thoroughbreds struck again in the 60th minute when Adebare Oyeniyi scored on a header off Beek's corner kick to give Skidmore a 2-0 advantage.

Plattsburgh State (5-1-1) had its chances in the second half as four of its five shots on goal came in the latter half of the game but Skidmore goalkeeper Danny Ebenstein answered the call each time. Ebenstein recorded five saves in his first win of the year for the Thoroughbreds.

Toper made two stops for the Cardinals in the loss, dropping to 3-1-1 on the year.

The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in the final 10 minutes of the game with Alexis Archilla getting two quality scoring chances. Archilla's first opportunity came in the 82nd minute off a cross pass from Joe Aratari, but Archilla's shot sailed over the net. He had another shot at getting Plattsburgh State on the board just a few minutes later but after carrying the ball deep into the box, the Cardinal rookie saw his shot go wide of the right post.

Plattsburgh State will look to bounce back Tuesday as the Cardinals travel to Utica for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday's game will serve as the final tune-up before the Cardinals begin league play on Saturday at home against Potsdam at 1 p.m.
