Men's Soccer Plays to a 1-1 Draw at Union

John Toper made eight saves in Saturday's 1-1 tie at Union College.
Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Despite outshooting the home team, 20-17, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Union College Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.

Both goalkeepers played a key role in the non-league game as Plattsburgh State's John Toper came up with eight saves. Union's Ryan Carter finished the day with 10 stops.

Toper made two saves on the first two shots on goal before Carter turned away a header from Ethan Votraw in 28th minute to keep the game scoreless. Toper recorded three saves in the first half.

The Cardinals (4-0-1) broke through late in the half on Shaq Jackson-Lee's first goal of the year. Steve Zacharczyk's initial shot was block but Jackson-Lee picked up the rebound and fired it into the bottom left corner to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead at 42:46.

Union (4-0-1) drew even at 59:08 on Daniel Miller's second of the season. Miller took a feed from Jake Soodek and buried the shot in the lower right corner of the net to make it a 1-1 game.

The Plattsburgh State offense had its chances in the second half, outshooting the Dutchmen, 12-5, but Carter came up with seven saves to keep the Cardinals from scoring the go-ahead goal.

The Dutchmen were the only team to register a shot on goal in the first overtime, but Toper denied the header by Union's Jeff Cohen to send the game to double overtime.

Plattsburgh State senior Matt Hamilton had two shots on goal in the second overtime, but he couldn't find a way to beat Carter, ending the game in a 1-1 tie. Hamilton led the Cardinals with five shots.

The Cardinals return to action Wednesday for a non-conference game at Clarkson. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
