Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. - After battling Cortland for 13 innings on Friday, the Plattsburgh State softball team took the field Saturday looking for redemption but came up just short, suffering a 2-1 loss in nine innings in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament at Brockport.
The Cardinals, who were eliminated from the tournament in the loss, finish the year with a 24-16 record.
Cortland took the lead in the bottom of the first when Lucia Meola drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Red Dragons held off the Cardinals until the top of the fourth when back-to-back Cortland errors put runners on the corners for Plattsburgh State. The Cardinals tied it up on a wild pitch, allowing Kristine Gay to cross the plate and make it a 1-1 game.
Much like Friday’s game, Cortland’s Amber Corrigan and Plattsburgh State’s Ashley Marshall spent the morning locked in another duel to force extra innings. The two pitchers continued to put up zeros until the bottom of the ninth when Marshall issues a lead-off walk to Erin Wolstenholme that would prove to be pivotal.
With a runner on first, the Red Dragons sent Nicole Gallo to the plate. Gallo laid down a bunt in an attempt to move the runner over, but a throwing error by the Cardinals’ catcher allowed the winning run to come around and score.
Gay had Plattsburgh State’s only hit while also scoring the Cardinals’ run. Cortland’s Jaime Bucci and Cassie Kardias each picked up two hits.
Corrigan earned the win for the Red Dragons, one-hitting the Cardinals while walking two and striking out four in nine innings of work.
Marshall took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing one earned run on six hits through eight innings. She walked two and struck out four to finish the season with a 21-7 record.
Brittany and Ashley Marshall represented Plattsburgh State on the All-Tournament Team.
Saturday’s game marks the last collegiate game for four Plattsburgh State players – Marshall, Melanie Hayes and Emily Sharlow and Kristin Nabor. Marshall wraps up her career as one of the most prolific pitchers to step in the circle for Plattsburgh State. She owns 14 pitching records, finishing her career with 84 wins and a remarkable 996 strikeouts.
