Cardinals Open SUNYAC Softball Tournament with Victory over Geneseo

Ashley Marshall struck out 10 to improve to 20-5 on the year.
Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team began the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Tournament with a 7-4 win over Geneseo at Clark V. Whited Field on the campus of The College at Brockport.
 
The Cardinals rallied on two separate occasions to overcome four errors and continue on in the tournament. With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 23-14 on the year while Geneseo drops to 20-19 overall.
 
Back-to-back errors by the Cardinals quickly allowed the Blue Knights to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. An RBI single by Geneseo’s Jenna Reilley drove in the second unearned run of the inning, putting Plattsburgh State in a 2-0 hole.
 
Plattsburgh State responded in the bottom half of the inning on two consecutive two-out RBI singles from Megan Price and Sam Capobianco to erase the deficit.
 
Geneseo regained the lead in the top of the third on a wild pitch but the Cardinals plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead. Price and Capobianco struck again for Plattsburgh State, each driving in another run, before Samantha Tenney picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
 
Brittany Marshall enjoyed a nice day for the Cardinals, scoring a run on a Geneseo error in the fourth and driving in a run in the sixth. The Plattsburgh State shortstop finished the day with three hits, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.
 
The Blue Knights made it a three-run game in the seventh with a solo home run by Samantha Trapasso, but Geneseo was unable to get any closer, giving the Cardinals the victory.
 
In addition to Marshall’s breakout day at the plate, Price and Capobianco each went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. The Cardinals accumulated 10 total hits.
 
Ashley Marshall took the ball for Plattsburgh State, allowing two earned runs, six hits and one walk in seven innings. She also struck out 10 to pick up her 20th win of 2013.
 
Geneseo’s Corrin Spallone suffered the loss, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits through six innings of work.
 
Friday’s first game at 9 a.m. will feature No. 4 Geneseo vs. No. 6 Oswego. The Cardinals will return to the field at 11 a.m. against No. 2 Cortland.
