Softball Returns to Conference Play with Sweep at Oneonta

Brianna Clarke had four hits, three RBIs and two walks in the Cardinals' doubleheader sweep on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. – Ashley Marshall combined for 21 strikeouts as the Plattsburgh State softball team took two games at Oneonta State Friday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader.
 
With the pair of wins, the Cardinals improve to 12-8 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons drop to 3-13 on the year and 1-5 against conference opponents.
 
Game One: Plattsburgh State 9, Oneonta State 5
A sacrifice fly by Megan Price in the top of the second inning gave Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead but Oneonta State scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to jump in front of the Cardinals by a 4-1 margin.
 
The Red Dragons added to their cushion in the third on a two-out RBI single by Nicole Marzillo, stretching the lead to 5-1.
 
The Cardinals’ offense came alive in the fourth after a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Brittany Marshall, who singled to score Samantha Tenney. A bases-loaded walk to Kristine Gay brought the Cardinals within two before a two-run double to left center by Brianna Clarke tied it up. Plattsburgh State added one more run later in the inning on an RBI single by Sam Capobianco.
 
Plattsburgh State tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to reach the 9-5 final.  Clarke and Capobianco each went 3 for 5 with two RBIs while Brittany Marshall was 2 for 4 with an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. The Cardinals totaled 16 hits in the come-from-behind win.
 
Marzillo and Katie O’Flynn each knocked in two runs for the Red Dragons.
 
Sam Moss got the win in game one for the Cardinals, going 3.2 innings and allowing eight hits and five runs with three strikeouts. Ashley Marshall came on in relief to earn his first save. Marshall held Oneonta to one hit through 3.1 innings while fanning seven.
 
Game Two: Plattsburgh State 3, Oneonta State 1
Oneonta’s Traci Lictenstein doubled in the first and scored on a throwing error by Cardinals’ center fielder Megan Price but Plattsburgh State rallied again to take the nightcap of the SUNYAC doubleheader by a score of 3-1.
 
Kerry McCarty tied it up in the top of the second inning with an RBI single that allowed Emily Sharlow to come around and score. Price followed with a single up-the-middle to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
 
Plattsburgh State added another run in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Brianna Clarke.
 
Price contributed two hits while Michelle Iannone and Samantha Tenney each doubled for the Cardinals, who finished with seven hits.
 
Ashley Marshall was dominant in the circle, limiting Oneonta to three hits and an unearned run in the complete game victory. Marshall hit double-digit strikeouts for the fifth time this season with 14 in the outing.
 
Oneonta’s Rachel Hitt allowed two earned runs on seven hits in the loss.
 
The Cardinals close out the weekend Saturday with a SUNYAC doubleheader at New Paltz. Game one is slated for noon.
