Box Score 2 PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2013 schedule Saturday, splitting a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals took game one, 5-4, before falling by a score of 4-3 in game two.
The Cardinals improve to 22-12 on the year and finish with a 12-6 record in league play to clinch the third seed in the 2013 SUNYAC Softball Tournament. The tournament, which will be hosted by Brockport, begins Thursday with the Cardinals playing No. 4 Geneseo at 1 p.m.
The Blue Devils close out the year with a 10-23 record overall and a 5-13 mark in the SUNYAC.
In between Saturday’s games, the Cardinals honored the 2013 senior class which includes Kristin Nabor, Melanie Hayes, Emily Sharlow and Ashley Marshall.
Game One: Plattsburgh State 5, Fredonia State 4
The Cardinals rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second en route to 5-4 come-from-behind win in game one of the doubleheader.
Fredonia jumped out front in the first on an RBI double by Tina Schwartzmeyer before adding to the lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Cherise Gunnell.
A two-out double by Samantha Tenney started the rally for the Cardinals in the bottom of the second. Kristin Nabor following with a walk before Kerry McCarty was hit by a pitch, leaving the bases loaded for Kristine Gay. Gay cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center, giving Plattsburgh State a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the bottom of the third on a solo shot to center field by Brianna Clarke.
The Blue Devils tied it up in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Schwartzmeyer but Plattsburgh State’s Michelle Iannone drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double.
Gay and Clarke each chipped in two hits and scored a run for the Cardinals in the win.
Schwartzmeyer went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Blue Devils. Fredonia’s Alyssa Morgan also added a pair of hits.
Ashley Marshall improved to 19-4 with the victory. Marshall allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out 14.
Fredonia’s Danielle Shelp suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits. Shelp walked one and struck out three.
Game Two: Fredonia State 4, Plattsburgh State 3
Plattsburgh State attempted to rally again in game two, this time from a four-run deficit, but the Cardinals were unable to overcome Fredonia, dropping game two by a score of 4-3.
Tina Schwartzmeyer continued her success at the plate, hitting a two-out RBI single in the top of the first to put the Blue Devils on the board. She later scored on a throwing error before an RBI single by Jamie Atkins gave Fredonia a quick 3-0 advantage. Fredonia added one more in the second on an RBI single by Alyssa Morgan to round out the scoring for the Blue Devils.
The Cardinals were finally able to break through in the sixth on an RBI single by Michelle Iannone, making it a 4-1 game. A fielding error by the Blue Devils opened the door for the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh, allowing two runs to score but Plattsburgh was unable to tie it up.
Plattsburgh State’s Brittany Marshall and Samantha Tenney each went 2 for 3 in the second game.
Sam Moss took the loss, allowing five hits and four runs – two of which were earned. Morgan Anderson came in to relieve Moss in the third, holding the Blue Devils to one hit through 4.2 innings.
Fredonia’s Raela Wiley-Delp earned the complete game win, surrendering three runs on six hits and striking out two.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season tomorrow in a round robin tournament at Union College. Plattsburgh State plays Ithaca at 12:30 p.m. before a 3 p.m. matchup with Union.
