No. 25 Cardinals Swept by Brockport in SUNYAC Doubleheader

Megan Price contributed four hits and two RBIs in Saturday's doubleheader against Brockport.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. – The No. 25 Plattsburgh State softball team suffered its first two conference losses Saturday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against Brockport. Both games were played at Vic Raschi Field on the campus of SUNY Geneseo.
 
The loss drops the Cardinals to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC. Brockport improves to 8-7 on the year and 4-0 in conference play.
 
Game One – Brockport 6, Plattsburgh State 5 (8 inn.)
A Plattsburgh State error in the bottom of the eight set up an unearned run to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 walk-off win in the eighth inning of game one.
 
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Julie Arnold singled to right field before advancing to second on an error. Caitlyn Rana doubled down the left field line in the next at-bat, allowing Arnold to scoring the winning run.
 
Brockport took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Jenna Yates. Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead before a two-out RBI single by Sarah Rosenbarker in the fifth put Brockport up 4-0.
 
Plattsburgh State capitalized on a pair of Brockport errors in the sixth, scoring all five of their runs in the top half of the inning. Michelle Iannone scored the Cardinals’ first run on a throwing error and Megan Price drove in a run with an RBI single through the left side. Later in the inning, Brittany Marshall reached on an error by Brockport pitcher Erin Fleming, allowing two unearned runs to cross the plate. After rallying to tie it at 4-4, the Cardinals were able to take the lead on a sacrifice fly from Brianna Clarke.
 
Yates drew a lead-off walk for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the seventh and scored the tying run on an RBI double to center field by Susanna Johnson to send the game to extra-innings.
 
Price had two of the Cardinals’ four hits while Brittany Marshall drew two walks.
 
Ashley Marshall suffered the loss, dropping to 8-3 on the year. She scattered 12 hits, allowed five earned runs and struck out 13.
 
Jaime Berger went the first five innings for Brockport, giving up two hits, one earned run and six walks. Fleming held the Cardinals to one run and two hits through the final three innings to earn the win.
 
Game Two – Brockport 3, Plattsburgh State 1
The Cardinals totaled eight hits but left nine runners on base in a 3-1 loss in the second half of the conference doubleheader against Brockport.
 
A lead-off single, a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base put Brockport’s Brianna Ferchen at third with one out in the bottom of the first inning. A fielder’s choice by Emily Dumas allowed Ferchen to cross the plate and give the Golden Eagles a quick 1-0 advantage.
 
The Cardinals tied it up in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Megan Price but Brockport’s Caitlyn Rana responded with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Golden Eagles a one-run lead.
 
Brockport picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning off an RBI single by Brianna Harris.
 
Michelle Iannone went 3 for 4 for the Cardinals while Price added two hits. Kristin Nabor drew a pair of walks.
 
Brockport’s Korey Kibling went 4.1 innings to earn the win, giving up one run on eight hits. Jaime Berger held the Cardinals hitless through the last 2.2. innings to earn her first save of the season.
 
Cardinal rookie Sam Moss was tagged for the loss, surrendering three runs and eight hits in six innings of work.
 
The Cardinals will look to rebound on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at RPI. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
