Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. – A seventh-inning rally of game two gave the nationally-ranked No. 25 Plattsburgh State softball team a doubleheader sweep at Geneseo in the first two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games of the season on Friday afternoon at Vic Raschi Field.
With the pair of wins, the Cardinals improve to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Geneseo drops to 4-10 and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.
Game One: Plattsburgh 6, Geneseo 1
Junior right fielder Megan Price powered Plattsburgh State to a 6-1 win over Geneseo in the first game of the doubleheader, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Kristin Nabor went 4 for 4 while Brittany Marshall and Michelle Iannone each added two hits, helping the Cardinals total 12 hits in game one. Samantha Tenney reached base twice with a pair of walks.
The Cardinals jumped in front of the Blue Knights in the top of the third inning when Price led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. Iannone hit a two-out RBI double to score Brianne Clarke later in the inning, giving Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead.
Geneseo sophomore Ashley Fillmore doubled to center field in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Cardinals’ lead in half, but Plattsburgh State plated three runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 5-1. Price doubled down the left field line to drive in two runs before scoring the Cardinals’ fifth run on a ground out later in the inning.
An RBI single by Clarke in the top of the sixth brought home Brittany Marshall to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.
Ashley Marshall improved to 7-2 on the year, holding the Blue Knights to just one run on two hits. Marshall struck out eight through 5.1 innings. Morgan Anderson allowed two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Geneseo’s Katie Gallagher took the loss, giving up six runs and 11 hits in six innings of work. Gallagher walked three and struck out six.
Game Two: Plattsburgh State 5, Geneseo 4
Trailing by one run in the top of the seventh, an error on a play at the plate led to two Plattsburgh State runs to give the Cardinals a come-from-behind 5-4 win and complete the sweep of the Blue Knights.
Plattsburgh State took advantage of a Geneseo error in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. With two outs and two on, the runners were in motion when Brittany Marshall singled up the middle, leading to a throwing error by the Blue Knights’ center fielder. Kerry McCarty scored on the error to put the Cardinals up by one.
Geneseo committed a total of four errors in the nightcap, leading to three unearned run for the Cardinals.
A ground out and a bunt single allowed the Blue Knights to score twice in the bottom of the third, putting Geneseo in front by a score of 2-1. A throwing error by the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth allowed two more Geneseo runs to cross the plate, extending the home team’s advantage to 4-1.
The Cardinals cut the deficit to two in the top of the sixth when an RBI double by Megan Price allowed McCarty to score.
Brianne Clarke led of the Plattsburgh State half of the seventh with a double to left field. Pinch-hitter Nicole Milano drove in Clarke with a one-out double, bringing the Cardinals within one. Milano was lifted for pinch-runner Natasha Schultz before Kristin Nabor singled to right and advance to second on the throw, putting two runners in scoring position.
The next batter, Samantha Tenney, stepped in and flied out to left field causing the runners to tag up and forcing a play at the plate. With a one-hop throw it appeared Nabor would be out at the plate but the ball popped out of the catcher’s glove and rolled toward first base, allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score for the Cardinals.
Sam Moss pitched into the third inning for Plattsburgh State, allowing one run and three hits. After a lead-off single in bottom of the third, Ashley Marshall came out of the bullpen to give up seven hits and one earned run while striking out six. In the bottom of the seventh she retired the side in order to secure her second win of the day.
Geneseo’s Corrin Spallone was tagged for two earned runs and nine hits in the loss.
The Cardinals will wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader against Brockport on Saturday at 3 p.m. The games will be played at Geneseo due to unplayable field conditions in Brockport.
