Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team wrapped up its final day at the NTC Spring Games with a split against William Paterson and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Cardinals finish their spring trip with a 7-5 record.
Plattsburgh State 10, William Paterson 2 (6 inn.)
The Cardinals scored 10 runs on 14 hits to run-rule William Paterson in Friday’s first game. Plattsburgh State enjoyed a nice day at the plate in the six inning game as Brianna Clarke went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Kristine Gay went 3 for 3 and also contributed two RBIs.
Brittany Marshall went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Sam Capobianco added an RBI single. Megan Price and Michelle Iannone picked up two hits apiece.
Sam Moss earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings. Moss walked one and had one strikeout. Ashley Marshall came on in relief to record the final two outs in the victory.
Wisconsin-Whitewater 3, Plattsburgh State 2
Four errors proved to be costly for the Cardinals, who suffered a one-run loss in the Florida finale. Ashley Marshall threw a complete game and gave up just one earned run. Marshall allowed five hits and one walk while strikeout out eight batters in the loss.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brittany Marshall got things going with a double before advancing to third on a single by Kristine Gay. An RBI single by Brianna Clarke brought home Marshall for Plattsburgh State’s first run. Later in the inning, Sam Capobianco drove in the Cardinals’ second run on a fielder’s choice.
Plattsburgh State finished the day with four hits – three of which came in the two-run first inning.
Wisconsin-Whitewater answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make in a one-run game.
The Warhawks knotted the score in the bottom of the third after a fielding error by the Cardinals before scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out error by Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh State is slated to begin its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule next weekend in a trip to Geneseo and Brockport. The Cardinals visit the Blue Knights Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. The conference weekend wraps up with a doubleheader at Brockport on Saturday at noon.
