Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With winter storm Nemo wreaking havoc outside of Memorial Hall on Friday evening, the Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team decided to create some precipitation of the basketball variety inside the facility on Friday night.
Brittany Marshall scorched the nets on 8-of-10 shooting, pouring in a game-high 23 points as the Cardinals demolished the Golden Eagles by a score of 51-39 in their first Memorial Hall appearance since January 19.
Plattsburgh State improves to 10-11 and 6-8 in conference games by putting an end to a four-game losing skid. On the other side of the coin, Brockport fell to 6-16 overall and 3-12 in league engagements.
It took just four seconds for Marshall to get going as the sophomore received the opening tip from the fingers of Devona Paul before pulling up from deep two-point range and making things 2-0 Plattsburgh State.
Brockport had a star of its own trying to reverse its fortunes in Cecilia Sigrist. The formidable forward netted five points as part of a 7-3 charge by the visitors that gave them their only lead of the game, 7-5, with 16:18 to go in the opening stanza.
Thanks to Kathleen Payne, the Cardinals weren’t playing catch-up for long. The junior hit a mid-range jumper off of a nice feed from Marshall, kick-starting 14-0 run for the home team that culminated with Catherine Cassidy drilling a triple thanks to yet another great pass – this one from Payne.
Besides thriving from an offensive standpoint, Plattsburgh State absolutely clamped down on defense making life miserable for the Golden Eagles. The Cardinals kept Brockport off of the scoreboard for 9:27 and forced nine turnovers by the visitors who went 0-of-9 from the field during that span.
Armed with a 12-point advantage, the Cardinals would allow their lead to dip below 10 points on a pair of occasions through the remainder of the first stanza. A pair of free throws from Brockport’s Meg Stucko made it a 26-17 game, but an 8-0 run culminating with a triple from Marshall quickly put the Golden Eagles back in a huge hole.
Thanks to a dominating statistical performance, the Cardinals were able to take a 34-19 lead into their locker room at halftime. Plattsburgh State shot 14-of-31 (45.1 percent) from the field in the first half including a 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) performance from downtown. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles struggled mightily, hitting just seven of their 27 shots (25.9 percent) and committing 14 turnovers.
Brooke Reifinger hit a step back jumper in the painted area to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the game, 47-25, with 10:58 to go in the second half. Holding the colossal lead, the Cardinals didn’t need to worry about the Golden Eagles again, who closed the rest of the game on a 14-4 spurt to account for the final margin.
No player other than Marshall reached double figures for the Cardinals. Cassidy was the runner-up in the scoring column for the Cardinals, netting eight points on 3-of-3 shooting including a 2-of-2 mark from beyond the arc. Payne tore down a team-high nine rebounds that helped the Cardinals to a 45-42 rebounding advantage over their SUNYAC foes.
Sigrist led the charge for Brockport with a team-high 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, but no other player for the Golden Eagles registered over four points. The normally dangerous Phoebe Byrnes was essentially a non-factor as shot just 1-of-10 from the field and finished with four markers.
Plattsburgh State shot 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) from the field in the rout while limiting the Golden Eagles to 14-of-57 (24.6 percent) that included a dismal 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) showing from downtown.
Plattsburgh State will finish off their first home SUNYAC weekend in February with a showdown against SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
