PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Through the final two weeks of the regular season, arguably no SUNYAC team has been better than Plattsburgh State.
The Cardinals, victorious in their last five SUNYAC confrontations, haven’t just been winning – they’ve been doing so handily. Averaging 63.6 points per game, the average margin of victory for Plattsburgh State has been 13 while holding opponents to 37.5 percent shooting from the field.
With a trip to Oneonta State on tap for the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs, the Cardinals are going to need every point their offense can muster if they hope to secure a victory and move on to the conference semifinals.
Tuesday’s bout between the No. 5-seed Cardinals and No. 4-seed Red Dragons is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m., and the Cardinals are looking for their first victory over Oneonta State at Dewar Arena since 2002 - not to mention their first win against the Red Dragons in any venue since 2007.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children (6-12). Children five and under and students from any SUNYAC institution that present a valid college ID will be admitted free of charge. Notorious for their stifling brand of defense, Oneonta State is third in the SUNYAC in points allowed per game (50.5), but averages just 53.3 points of its own per outing. The Red Dragons also boast the second-best field goal percentage defense (30.9 percent) in the league.
The Cardinals, who are making their third consecutive appearance in the SUNYAC tournament, have proven that they can be defensive-minded as well as they lead the 10-team conference in blocked shots (4.96 per game).
One year after setting the program’s single-season scoring record, Kathleen Payne continues to be one of the primary threats for the Cardinals on the offensive end of the floor. The junior averages a SUNYAC second-best 14.2 point per game and it 11
th in the league in rebounding average (6.7 per game).
In addition to one of the premier frontcourt players in the league, Plattsburgh State’s backcourt continues to click as well. Sophomore guard Brittany Marshall has proven herself to be one of the best guards in the league, averaging 11.2 points per game while dishing out a SUNYAC-best 4.5 assists per game.
Senior Catherine Cassidy ranks third in the conference in terms of assists per game, averaging 3.7. A very talented all-around player, the Brooklyn, N.Y., product also averages 4.1 points per game and four rebounds per outing.
In just her first collegiate campaign, Devona Paul has helped to anchor the interior defense for the Cardinals. The native of Blauvelt, N.Y., averages 1.6 blocked shots per game while putting up offensive numbers of 5.2 points per tilt.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will face the number-one seed New Paltz on Friday at 8 p.m. in the second semifinal game of the SUNYAC tournament. Both semifinal games will take place at New Paltz.
