Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – Heading into their SUNYAC matchup at SUNY Cortland, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team may have had an inkling that their matchup with the Red Dragons was going to require extra time to settle.
Through its first 10 games of 2013, SUNY Cortland had already been involved in six overtime affairs and Saturday was no different. Unfortunately for Plattsburgh State, the Red Dragons also continued their trend of never having lost during the extra period.
The Cardinals gave up a goal to Kelly Knight 6:04 into the additional frame which led to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of their SUNYAC foes. With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 3-7-1 and 1-2 in SUNYAC tilts while SUNY Cortland improves to 4-3-4 and 2-0-2 in league battles.
Although the squads battled through a scoreless first half, there were a number of good scoring opportunities for each side. Just 2:27 into the bout, junior defender Charisse Abellard took the first corner kick of the day and sent a ball to senior Emily LaLone. The Watertown, N.Y., product tried to nestle her header into the back of the Cortland net, but the shot went wide to the right.
SUNY Cortland attempted the first shot on goal of the morning match when Steph Cardillo sent a shot at Plattsburgh's Kristy Kirkpatrick at the 34:43 mark of the match. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Melissa Rodriguez accounted for the Cardinals' first shot on goal, but her scoring attempt at 37:20 was handled by Rachel Axt (3-1-3).
The Red Dragons took the lead for the first time thanks to a second-half penalty kick. Amanda Margolis sent a low ball past Kirkpatrick (2-3) into the right corner of the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â

Minutes later, sophomore Cassidy Clavet nearly knotted matters at one, but her shot at 58:59 hit the crossbar before her follow-up attempt was blocked by a Cortland defender. Ashley Pagano then tried to even things up, but her shot at 59:07 was sent wide to the right.
With time running down for the Cardinals, senior Lauren Gonyea was subbed in at the 70:29 mark. Just 59 seconds later, the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product netted the equalizing goal by corralling a loose ball 25 yards out from the Cortland net and blasting a one-time shot past Axt. Gonyea's third goal of the season was unassisted.
Near the end of regulation, the Cardinals continued to control play be attempting four shots over the final 5:11 of the second half.
Gonyea tried her hand at getting another ball past Axt in the overtime period, but her scoring attempt at 95:41 was saved.
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals were able to outshoot their competition (22-19). LaLone took a game-high six shots while Clavet attempted five. Gonyea racked up three shots – two of which were on goal.
SUNY Cortland was whistled for five offside violations, but took four corner kicks compared to two by the Cardinals.
With their latest SUNYAC road trip in the history books, the Cardinals will make their return to the Field House Soccer Complex next weekend. Plattsburgh State will host Oneonta State on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
