Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team watched its 1-0 lead slip away late in Saturday's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game as the Cardinals suffered a 2-1 loss to the Cortland Red Dragons in overtime at the Field House Turf Complex.
Cortland held a slight edge in a scoreless first half as the Red Dragons took a 6-5 advantage in shots to the locker room. Corner kicks also favored the visiting team after the first 45 minutes with Cortland leading 7-2.
Plattsburgh State was able to strike first at 55:22 on Tom Greene's second of the year from Matt Hamilton. Hamilton trapped the ball with his chest before getting his left boot on the ball but Cortland goalkeeper Tim Beauvais made a diving save on Hamilton's shot. Greene came in from the left side and tapped the ball over Beauvais to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Despite only having one shot on goal in the second half, the Red Dragons made the most of it as Darren McCormack scored the game-tying goal in the 85
th minute with a free kick that sailed over Cardinal goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon and into the top right corner of the goal. McCormack's fifth of the season tied the game at 1-1 to force overtime.
The Cardinals were not without their chances, outshooting the Red Dragons, 12-1, in the second half, but Beauvais made six stops in the latter half to hold Plattsburgh State off the board. The Cardinals finished the day with a 19-9 edge in shots and a 10-9 advantage in corner kicks.
Fouls led to the Cardinals' demise Saturday as another free kick by McCormack would set up the game-winning goal at 6:56 of overtime. Jordon turned away McCormack's kick but Cortland's Dillon Johnson headed the rebound into the back of the net to give the Red Dragons the come-from-behind victory.
Beauvais recorded eight saves in the win for Cortland. Jordon made two stops in the loss for the Cardinals.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State drops to 8-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the SUNYAC. Cortland improves to 6-5-0 on the year and 3-1-0 in conference play.
Plattsburgh State will look to bounce back Friday as the Cardinals head to Oneonta State for a 4 p.m. conference matchup. The Cardinals close out the weekend at New Paltz Saturday with a 1 p.m. start time.
