Men's Soccer Blanks Oswego State, 2-0, in SUNYAC Matchup

Alexis Archilla scored the eventual game-winner in the third minute of Plattsburgh State's 2-0 win.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team tallied a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over Oswego State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest Friday afternoon at the Field House Turf Complex.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. The Lakers drop to 0-8-1 on the year and 0-3-0 in the SUNYAC.

Plattsburgh State wasted no time as Alexis Archilla scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season on a header off a rebound with just 2:38 gone in the game. Nick Parrella, whose initial shot was stopped by Oswego goalkeeper Jon Runge, picked up the assist.

The Lakers' best opportunity game in the 13th minute when Zack Saccocio ripped a high shot towards the goal, but Plattsburgh State goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon came up with a big diving stop to keep the visitors off the board.

Despite some quality scoring chances throughout the first half, the Cardinals were unable to build on the lead as the home team headed to the locker room at halftime with the one-goal edge. Plattsburgh State held an 11-1 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes, but Runge made five saves in the first half to keep the Cardinals at bay.

The Cardinals finally broke through for an insurance goal at 71:33 when Nick Economou found the back of the net with a header shot off Tom Greene's corner kick to put Plattsburgh State ahead, 2-0. The goal was Economou's second of the year.

Jordon earned his third shutout as he turned away both shots he faced to improve to 5-0-0 on the year. Runge made six saves for the Lakers in the loss.

Plattsburgh State finished the day with a 20-3 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.

Conference play continues tomorrow afternoon at the Field House Turf Complex as the Cardinal men's soccer team hosts SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
