Men's Soccer Drops Regular-Season Finale at No. 19 St. Lawrence

Box Score CANTON, N.Y. -  Despite a strong effort for its defensive corps, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at nationally-ranked No. 19 St. Lawrence in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Cardinals close out the regular season with a 12-5-1 record overall and a 6-3 mark in conference play. The Saints improve to 12-2-2 on the season and 6-1-0 in the Liberty League.

St. Lawrence and Plattsburgh battled a slick field throughout the first half, with neither team being able to generate much offense.  Plattsburgh's best opportunity in the first half came with about three minutes left as Steve Zacharczyk flicked the ball over the St. Lawrence defense into the box to Joe Aratari. Saints' goalkeeper Aaron Costello came off his line to take the ball before Aratari could gain possession.

The Saints opened the second stanza with more energy, getting off three solid chances in the first five minutes. In the 55th minute St. Lawrence had another dangerous series of shots that started with Morgan Smith's bid off a restart from about 30 yards out.  Plattsburgh State goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon answered the call, making the a diving stop on the initial shot and then stopping two quick shots off the rebound from Jamal Samaroo to keep the Saints off the board.

St. Lawrence broke through in the 68th minute as Dan Hunt scored his third goal of the season. Mark Provost took a shot from the top of the box that was deflected to Hunt, who beat Jordon with a low shot that ended up being the game-winner.

The Cardinals nearly tied the game with less than two minutes left when a scramble in front of the net sent the ball out to Alexis Archilla at the top of the box. Archilla's hard shot beat Costello but ricocheted off of the crossbar and came straight down in front of the goal line.

Despite holding the home team just one goal, the Saints owned hefty advantages in shots (21-3) and corner kicks (7-0) in the contest.  Jordon made five saves for the Cardinals in the loss while Costello recorded two stops to pick up the shutout for the Saints.

Plattsburgh State now turns its attention to the postseason as the Cardinals enter the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament as the fourth seed. The Cardinals host fifth-seeded Buffalo State at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Field House Turf Complex.
