Payne Becomes Newest Member of 1,000-Point Club in 59-50 Setback to Fredonia State

Kathleen Payne reached the 1,000-point mark in Plattsburgh State's setback to Fredonia State on Saturday.
Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. – Although Kathleen Payne became the eighth player in the history of the Plattsburgh State women’s basketball program to reach the 1,000-point plateau, the Cardinals (9-9, 5-6 SUNYAC) couldn’t complete a season sweep of Fredonia State (10-7, 5-6 SUNYAC), falling 59-50 at Steele Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The squads compiled near-identical statistical averages during the SUNYAC bout, but the Blue Devils made use of a second-half surge to break things open.

Much like what transpired the last time these two clubs crossed paths, neither squad was able to jump out to any sort of convincing lead in the opening 20 minutes. Plattsburgh State captured its largest lead of the stanza right out of the gates as Tequilla Lloyd hit a jumper on the first Cardinal possession before Brooke Reifinger splashed the first of two three-point baskets for the visiting team in the half on the ensuing drive.

A quick 5-0 run from the Blue Devils knotted things up and set the tone for a back-and-forth first half. Applying an intense form of defensive pressure, Fredonia State forced 13 turnovers by the Cardinals in the frame and racked up 11 steals in that span as well.

Coming off the bench, Kathleen Payne scored five consecutive points that once again staked the visitors to a five-point edge before Fredonia State employed a 12-2 run to take a 24-19 lead with just 3:32 to go in the initial period.

Thanks in large part to Dana Nucaro, though, the Cardinals were able to enter their locker room with a lead for the second consecutive night. The senior drilled a wide-open triple thanks to a nice feed from Payne before going 1-of-2 at the free throw stripe on the next Plattsburgh State possession.

Misha Green hustled down an offensive rebound and connected on her put-back layup with 22 seconds to go in the frame to make it a 25-24 game at the halftime break.

Jaimie Warren knocked down a long-range basket to begin the scoring in the second half, but Payne recorded her 1,000th and 1,001st points on a layup from Brittany Marshall to put the game in a 27-27 deadlock.

Green nailed a jumper on the next Plattsburgh State offensive trip that made things 29-27 in favor of the Cardinals, but that was the final time the Cardinals would lead in the game.

Fredonia State embarked on a 16-2 run that gave them control of the game for good. Ayomide Adedapo scored the lone Plattsburgh State basket during the stretch of 8:46 that saw the Cardinals shoot just 1-of-11 from the field.

Nine of the 16 points scored during the devastating stretch were off the hand of Warren who finished with a game-high 21.

Trying to will the Cardinals back into the game, Marshall trimmed the Fredonia State lead to just six, 45-39, after a three-point play and a deep triple but that’s as close as the Cardinals would come for the rest of the tilt.

Plattsburgh State was just 8-of-33 (24.2 percent) from the field in the deciding frame while the Blue Devils his nearly 42 percent (13-of-31) of their field goal attempts in that same length of time.

Warren completed her double-double by pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. SUNYAC scoring machine Becky Hebert finished with 19 markers for the Blue Devils who out-rebounded the Cardinals 52-44.

Aside from Payne, who recorded a team-high 13 points, no member of the Plattsburgh State squad reached double figures in the scoring column. Green and Marshall each finished with eight while Devona Paul chipped in five and hustled down a team-high six rebounds.

Plattsburgh State will remain on the road next Friday as it travels to Oneonta to try and upend the Red Dragons on their home floor. The SUNYAC confrontation will begin at 8 p.m.
