Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Instead of relying on one or two players to push it to victory, the Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team received important contributions from up and down the lineup in a wire-to-wire 73-62 win over SUNYAC foe Brockport on Saturday afternoon at the Jim and John Vlogiantis Gymnasium.
Sophmore Brittany Marshall had 15 points, leading a quartet of Cardinals (8-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) who finished with 10 or more. Plattsburgh State shot 27-of-63 (42.9 percent) from the field in the win.
Determined to get back to the win column in SUNYAC action, the Cardinals never trailed in the first half and forced 10 turnovers by the Golden Eagles (5-8, 2-4 SUNYAC) in that span as well. Plattsburgh State opened the game on a 6-2 run that began with a pair of free throw makes by Brooke Reifinger.
A haphazard group of Golden Eagles were on the floor for the first nine minutes of the game. The home squad misfired on all but one of its first 11 field goal attempts thanks to some intense defense by the Cardinals.
Terrorizing Brockport on the interior was freshman Devona Paul, who collected all four of her blocked shots in the first half while pulling down six of the 24 rebounds corralled by the Cardinals during the first 20 minutes.
Willing to take it into the lane time and time again, the Cardinals went to the free throw stripe on 13 occasions in the first stanza, making good on seven of those attempts.
The Cardinals saw their lead increase to 20-10 after Marshall went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe with 7:10 left in the half. As Brockport finally began to heat up from the field, the Cardinals had the response each time, retaining their 10-point edge as Marshall connected on a triple thanks to a fine feed from Dana Nucaro.
Brockport used a 5-0 run – all at the free throw line – to get back into the thick of the things. Cecilia Sigrist accounted for all five points during the small surge that made things 27-22 with 3:46 left in the frame.
Plattsburgh State allowed Brockport to creep even closer thanks to a 2-of-9 performance from the field over the last 3:18 of the initial frame. Sigrist continued her hot start, finishing the half with 10 points including the final two of the half that made it a 31-27 Plattsburgh State lead heading into the halftime strategy session.
Nucaro found Tequilla Lloyd for a layup for the first points of the final 20-minute period, and the Cardinals would need every one of their points to keep up with the hot hand of Phoebe Byrnes.
Byrnes netted 21 of the 36 points for Brockport in the second half, powering her team to within three, 50-47, with 7:34 left in regulation.
Marshall silenced the rambunctious Brockport bench with a deep triple on the next Plattsburgh State possession that began a 7-0 run to give the visitors a 57-47 lead with 5:39 to go.
An aggressive Byrnes bullied her way into the lane and sliced into the Cardinals’ lead with a pair of free throws, but Reifinger responded by drilling a triple of her own on the next offensive voyage for the Cardinals.
After another pair of free throw makes by Byrnes, Marshall sought out her teammates – namely Paul – to help the Cardinals put things on ice. Marshall found the dynamic freshman for a pair of layups over the next 25 seconds, giving Plattsburgh State its largest lead of the game, 64-51, with 3:40 to go.
Try as they might, the Golden Eagles couldn’t get back into things thanks to some lackluster interior defense down the stretch. Yazmin Lewis and Misha Green each netted a layup to keep the Cardinals in front by double-digits. Marshall went 4-of-4 from the free throw line over the final 51 seconds of action to wrap things up.
In addition to Marshall’s team-high 15 points, Kathleen Payne added 14 while Lloyd chipped in 10 markers. Paul enjoyed a game of near-perfection, netting 12 on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench. The Blauvelt, N.Y., product added a team-high eight rebounds and a steal.
Byrnes finished with a game-high 27 points on 7-of-14 shooting and Sigrist chipped in 12 for the Golden Eagles who shot just 19-of-60 (31.7 percent) from the field including a 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) mark from downtown.
The Cardinals held a 49-38 rebounding edge over Brockport and out-blocked their SUNYAC foes 10-2 in the win.
After a road split, the Cardinals return to Memorial Hall for a three-game home stand next week. First up is a Tuesday test against NESCAC foe Williams. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
