PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s tennis team took two matches Saturday during State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play against host school Oneonta State and Cortland.
Plattsburgh and Oneonta began their match Friday afternoon, but the two teams saw the matchup halted at a 4-4 tie due to darkness. Prior to the stoppage, the Cardinals pulled off a huge comeback at No. 2 doubles as Caitlin Belladone and Rachel Hodnett battled back from a 5-2 deficit to take the match, 9-7.
Hodnett earned a win at No. 1 singles over Brynn Sussman by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Jessica Paquette added a victory at No. 3 singles, while Emily Carlin picked up a point for the Cardinals at No. 6 singles.
Samantha Engebrecht stepped in for Plattsburgh at No. 2 singles, dropping the first set, 6-2. The Cardinals’ sophomore took the second set 7-5 and held a 3-2 lead in the third set before darkness set in. Engebrecht finished off the win Saturday morning by taking the final set, 6-4, and helping Plattsburgh secure a 5-4 win against Oneonta.
Plattsburgh gave a dominant performance against Cortland, defeating the Red Dragons, 8-1. The pairing of Paquette and Engebrecht took No. 1 doubles, 8-6, while the Cardinals also earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Hodnett was the only Cardinal to drop her match, falling to Loraine Jelinek in No. 1 singles. Engebrecht, Paquette, Carlin, Stephanie Omlin and Jackie Bogdon all earned points in singles action, winning their matches handily to allow Plattsburgh to improve to 4-0 on the year.
The Cardinals wrap up SUNYAC Pool Play tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against New Paltz.
