Plattsburgh State Drops 2-1 Decision to Oswego State

Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Emily LaLone tallied her first goal of 2012, but it wasn’t enough to put the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team in the win column as Oswego State emerged victorious via a 2-1 tally at the Field House Complex on Saturday (Sep. 29).

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-6-0 and 1-2-0 in SUNYAC play while the Lakers improve to 4-4-0 and 2-2-0 in the league.

Prior to Saturday’s match, six of the last nine games between the two squads at the Field House Complex had been settled by one goal or less. The tight, low-scoring trend carried through to Saturday, as all three goals were recorded in the first 38 minutes of action.

Oswego State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 18:09 mark when Bri Dolan sent a high arcing shot past the outstretched fingertips of Cardinal keeper Monica D’Ippolito. The 25-yard shot came as a result of one of Plattsburgh State’s 15 fouls on the afternoon.

As her Oswego State counterpart had done in the 18th minute, LaLone fired a shot off a foul that found its way past Lakers keeper Emily Varoiner. After the Lakers were whistled for one of their 15 citations, LaLone set up shop just beyond the box and blasted a shot that nestled itself in the top left corner of the goal to make things 1-1 at the 34:34 mark.

Not even three minutes later, Nikki Liadka would put the Lakers ahead for good as she took a pass from Georgia Traynor in the box and sent a grounder straight into the bottom left corner from three yards out. It was Liadka’s sixth goal of the 2012 season.

Cammey Keyser had a golden opportunity to knot things at two when she broke free from her defender in the 68th minute. The freshman sent a screaming shot toward Varonier that was somehow turned away. No Cardinal could locate the ball to try again in the ensuing chaos, however, and the Lakers escaped that juncture – and the rest of the contest – unscathed.

The Cardinals owned a sizable lead in shots, 15-7, over their SUNYAC foes, including six that tested Varonier. Plattsburgh State edged out the Lakers in the corner kick department, 5-4.

LaLone was the primary offensive threat for the Cardinals, recording five shots in the game – four of which were on target. Held in check was Oswego State’s Bailey Waterbury – daughter of Plattsburgh State head coach Karen Waterbury. The freshman started the game, but recorded no shots.

After their longest home stand of the season, the Cardinals will hit the road for a pair of SUNYAC confrontations next week. First up is a matchup at New Paltz, where the Cardinals and Hawks will kick things off at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 5).
