OSWEGO, N.Y. – After suffering a tough overtime loss Friday, the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team got back on track with a 2-0 win in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest at Oswego State Saturday afternoon at Laker Soccer Field.
Plattsburgh keeper Andy Heighington made four saves to earn his 10
th win and fifth shutout of the year. With the win, he sets a new career shutout record with 32. The senior out of Simcoe, Ontario breaks the record of 31 set previously by former Cardinal John San Filippo, who was a standout goalkeeper for Plattsburgh from 2005-2008.
The Cardinals (11-1-0, 2-1 SUNYAC) opened the scoring in the 16
th minute when Plattsburgh’s leading scorer Matt Hamilton buried a free kick from 20 yards out into the right corner of the net.
Jarred Antonucci doubled the lead at 55:56 when he collected a loose ball and fired a shot through the right side. Laker goalie Pat Breen got a hand on the ball, but was unable to keep it from crossing the line as the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead.
Breen recorded one save in the loss as his record drops to 0-5-1 for Oswego.
Oswego State (1-8-1, 0-3-1 SUNYAC) outshot Plattsburgh 8-6, including a 4-1 margin in the second half. The Lakers’ best opportunity came in the 79
th minute when Ryan Purdy ripped a free kick from approximately 20 yards out but Heighington came up with a diving stop to preserve the shutout.
Physicality continued to define the weekend as the two teams combined for 38 fouls and six yellow cards. The Lakers finished the day with 25 fouls and four yellow cards, while the Cardinals had 13 and two, respectively.
The Cardinals return home next weekend for a full weekend of conference play. Plattsburgh hosts New Paltz Friday at 4 p.m. before a showdown on Saturday with reigning SUNYAC Champion Oneonta State at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Field House Soccer Complex.
