Offense Gets Back on Track as Cardinals Take 3-0 Decision Over Potsdam

Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – It took two weeks and over 437 minutes of playing time, but the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team finally got its offensive groove back, racking up three goals in a 3-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday (Sep. 22) at the Field House Complex.

The Cardinals, who emerged victorious in their sixth consecutive SUNYAC opener, improve to 5-4-0 and 1-0-0 in league play while the Bears drop to 2-6-0 and 0-1-0 in conference confrontations. For the tenth consecutive meeting between the two squads, the Cardinals did not allow the Bears to get on the scoreboard – a streak that dates back nearly a decade.
Plattsburgh State is 25-0-1 all-time against their in-state foes and has outscored them 108-11 in those meetings.

A windy first half made for just 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of play between the teams while making things interesting from a goaltending standpoint. Early in the 43rd minute, sophomore Macee Maddock launched a lob shot from over 30 yards out that found its way over the head of Potsdam keeper Jaime Durant, staking the hosts to a 1-0 advantage.

The goal, which was the first in the collegiate career of Maddock, was assisted by Olivia Hopeck. Just five minutes into the second half Kristie Pageau broke free from a cadre of Potsdam defenders before rifling a shot that deflected off the mitts of Durant. The rebound went directly to the trailing Marcelle Schepisi who tapped in the first goal of her collegiate career to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

Another freshman would account for the final tally of the contest, as Taylor Florio bent her corner kick into the hands of Durant. The netminder saw the ball deflect off of her fingertips and into the net, giving Florio her first college score as well.

Although she didn’t produce a goal in the one-sided affair, Pageau was the catalyst of much of the offense. The senior terrorized the Potsdam defense, utilizing her speed to slice through it and set up her teammates. Pageau finished with an assist and a match-high three shots on goal.

Thanks to the defense of the Cardinals, Monica D’Ippolito didn’t have to worry about much from a goalkeeping standpoint. The Mahopac, N.Y., product stopped both of the shots fired at her before relinquishing her post to Danielle Schmitt for the final 12 minutes of play.

Plattsburgh State finished with 20 shots in the match – including 13 in the final 45 minutes – compared to just five by the visitors. The Cardinals finished with a marked advantage in the shots on goal department as well, 14-2.

The Bears attempted one more corner kick than the hosts, finishing with five.

The Cardinals are off until Friday (Sep. 28) when they welcome SUNY Cortland to the Field House Complex. Plattsburgh State will try to improve to 2-0-0 in the SUNYAC when the match commences at 4 p.m.
