Men's Soccer Shuts Down Clarkson to Remain Unbeaten

Tom Greene tallied his first goal of the year in Plattsburgh's 2-0 win Wednesday night.
Box Score
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team scored twice in the second half, handing the Clarkson Golden Knights a 2-0 loss Wednesday night at the Field House Soccer Complex.

The win marks the fourth shutout of the season for the Cardinals, who improve to 8-0-0. With the loss, Clarkson drops to 0-5-1 on the year.

Plattsburgh maintained possession throughout most of the first 45 minutes but the Clarkson defense minimized the Cardinals’ scoring opportunities as the two teams finished the half in a scoreless tie. The best scoring chance of the half came in the 44th minute when a header by Nick Pourakis was blocked by a Golden Knights’ defender. A few seconds later, Cardinal freshman Fabian Chaparro picked up the rebound, firing a shot from close range that soared just above the net.

Clarkson started to show some wear and tear in the second half as the Cardinals continued to apply the pressure. Erik Hakim appeared poised to break the tie in the 66th minute, but the Golden Knights got lucky as his header ricocheted off the crossbar.

The Cardinals finally broke through at 69:47 when Matt Martin’s cross pass found Mike Payne, who chipped a shot over Clarkson goaltender Scott Stuart to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.

Junior forward Tom Greene made it a two-goal lead with his first of the year in the 76th minute. Greene took a pass from Nick Parrella before turning past a defender and firing a shot from the middle of the box to find the back of the net.

Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington made three saves to earn his seventh victory. Stuart turned away five of the seven shots he faced in the loss for Clarkson.

The Cardinals held a 15-6 advantage in shots and took five corner kicks, while the Golden Knights took one in the first half. Plattsburgh has won 13-straight contests against Clarkson – a streak that dates back to the 1999 season.

Plattsburgh will look to keep its perfect record in tact this weekend in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener at SUNY Potsdam. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
