Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Forced to contend with a top-10 Division III adversary as well as some tempestuous weather conditions, the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team dropped its fourth consecutive 1-0 decision – this time to No. 9 Middlebury – on Tuesday (Sep. 18) at the Field House Complex.
The Panthers’ (4-0-0) Scarlett Kirk posted the only goal of the game with just 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, sending a strong grounder past a diving Monica D’Ippolito – putting an end to an affair where defense was the overriding theme.
Driving wind and rain through the first 45 minutes of play made it near-impossible for any side to get many good looks on the offensive end. Each squad sent just one shot at the keeper, with Hannah Saccocio registering the first on-target attempt of the contest in the sixth minute of play.
The skies turned far less turbulent to begin the second half, leading to an offensive onslaught by both sides. D’Ippolito (3-1-0) made a number of impressive stops from all angles, finishing with 11 saves on the evening.
Plattsburgh State (4-4-0) saw its cleanest shot on goal come off the foot of Kristie Pageau. The senior out of Dannemora, N.Y., slipped through the Middlebury defense and sent a strong strike toward Middlebury keeper Elizabeth Foody (4-0-0) in the 72
nd minute of action.
After an even first half, the Panthers ratcheted up the offensive intensity through the remainder of the game, outshooting the Cardinals 12-3 in the second frame and 5-1 in the deciding overtime segment to finish with a 21-7 advantage in shots by the time the game concluded.
Pageau led the way with three shots – two of which were on target – for the Cardinals. Kirk was the primary offensive weapon for the Panthers, racking up six shots including two on net.
Normally owning a strong advantage in the corner kick department, the Cardinals finished with just two compared to seven by the visitors.
With three games remaining in its longest home stand of 2012, Plattsburgh State opens up SUNYAC play on Saturday (Sep. 22) when it welcomes SUNY Potsdam to the field house complex. The Cardinals, who have not dropped a SUNYAC opener since the 2006 campaign, will do battle with the Bears beginning at 1 p.m.
