PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Renee Egan scored two goals as the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team defeated Johnson State, 5-0, in the first game of the 2012 Cardinal Classic Tournament.
Freshman Megan Colby got the Cardinals (1-0-0) going in the fourth minute with she fired a shot that lofted over the head of Johnson State (0-1-0 goaltender Katja Langmaid. Kristie Pageau buried a pass from Ashley Pagano in the 27
th minute before Egan’s shot rebounded off Langmaid to give Plattsburgh a 3-0 lead at the half.
Egan opened the second half with her second of the day and newcomer Cassidy Clavet rounded out the scoring at 55:46 to secure Plattsburgh’s spot in the championship game.
Plattsburgh maintained possession through most of the afternoon, outshooting the Badgers 30-1. Taylor Cammer was credited with Johnson State’s only shot on the day.
Cardinals’ goalie Monica D’Ippolito did not need to make a save to secure the win. Sophomore Danielle Schmitt took over in the Plattsburgh net for the final 34:14 and did not face a shot.
Langmaid made 15 stops in the loss for the Badgers.
The Cardinals will face Keene State Sunday in the championship game at 1:30 p.m.
Keene State 6, Lyndon State 0
Keene State got a pair of goals from Brittany Boscarino to top Lyndon State, 6-0, in the second game of the Cardinal Classic. The win marked Owls’ head coach Denise Lyons 300
th career coaching victory.
Joan Hamel put the Owls on the board in the sixth minute with an unassisted goal. Jessica Berthiaume made it 2-0 at 12:31 from Alex Haley before two quick goals from Kara Pavlidis and Hayley Kenyon gave Keene State a 4-0 lead. Boscarino’s header off a cross found the back of the net in the 37
th minute to give the Owls a comfortable lead at halftime.
Boscarino scored the lone goal of the second half in the 83
rd minute with a short tap-in from three yards out.
Keene State outshot Lyndon State, 23-2, and took eight corner kicks while the Hornets finished the day with two.
Lyndon State goalie Adele Zeh made 11 saves in the loss. Keene State split time between goaltenders Victoria Crenson and Victoria Tarabelli. Crenson was credited with the win while Tarabelli recorded one save in the second half.
Lyndon State will face Johnson State in the consolation game at 11 a.m. while the Owls of Keene State will square off against the Cardinals at 1:30 p.m. for the tournament championship.
