PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team (16-5, 7-1 SUNYAC) swept New Paltz (10-12, 4-2 SUNYAC) 4-3 and 11-2 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) double header Saturday at Cardinal Park.

Game 1:
The opening game of the double header needed extra innings to decide the winner after the score was tied at 3-3 after seven innings. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Erin Florkiewicz tripled into right field to put the Hawks on the back foot. Dana Mandery then stole second after she had been intentionally walked and then Megan Price was also intentionally walked. With the bases loaded Allison Smiddy stepped up to bring Florkiewicz home and give the Cardinals the victory by hitting a single center field.

The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the second inning after Florkiewicz got a RBI for bringing Katie McNally home and then scored herself on an error by the Hawks catcher. Mandery then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Marshall to give the Cardinals the advantage.

The Hawks answered right back in the third inning with three runs of their own to tie the game up. A single by Shayna Burgess brought Jenna Curcio in to score and then Kristen Schork scored after Samantha Barra grounded out. Shelby Martin hit a single to left field, bringing Shayna Burgess home to give the Hawks all the scoring they could get in game one.

Ashley Marshall pitched the last 1.2 innings of the game in relief of Heather Loughran. Marshall got the win after giving up just one hit. Loughran pitched 6.1 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs.

Game 2:
The Cardinals completed the sweep of the Hawks using some powerful hitting to end the game in the 6th inning. Brittany Marshall, Brianna Clarke, Florkiewicz and McNally all recorded home runs in the game to push the Cardinals to victory.

The Hawks started the game quickly, taking a two run lead in the opening inning, but the Cardinals scored multiple runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to blow the game open.

With Brittany Marshall on second, Brianna Clarke reached first base after an error by the Hawks shortstop and Marshall came around to score to get things going for the Cardinals in the third inning. McNally then hit a two-run homer to give Plattsburgh the lead.

In the fourth inning with Mandery and Florkiewicz on base, Brittany Marshall hit a laser over the fence to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Cardinals. Florkiewicz added a home run of her own with McNally already on base in the fifth inning to make 8-2.

The final inning of the game saw the Cardinals tack on another three runs. Mandery scored after Brittany Marshall grounded out second base and then Clarke sent a home run out to right field for two runs and to finish the game.
Ashley Marshall pitched all six innings for the Cardinals, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Brittany Marshall led Plattsburgh with four RBI’s, while Clarke three RBI’s of her own.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Lawrence for a non-conference double header. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
