Cardinals Dominate Oneonta in SUNYAC Softball Sweep

Allison Smiddy drove in four runs as the Cardinals picked up two wins against Oneonta Friday.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team scored a combined 12 runs while holding Oneonta State scoreless to take both games of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader Friday at Cardinal Park.
 
Plattsburgh (14-5, 5-1 SUNYAC) rattled off 12 hits in game one as the Cardinals defeated Oneonta, 8-0, in five innings.. Two errors by the Red Dragons (4-12, 0-4 SUNYAC) gave way to a couple of runs for the Cardinals in the bottom of the first as Allison Smiddy and Brianna Clarke would come around to score.
 
In the bottom half of the fourth, three straight Plattsburgh singles would load the bases for Smiddy, who brought them all home with a double to right center.
 
Megan Price put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run walk-off home run.
 
Heather Loughran tossed a one-hitter for Plattsburgh to improve to 3-2 on the year. Loughran walked two and struck out seven. Katie O’Flynn suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits through four innings of work.
 
In game two, Ashley Marshall was in cruise control for the Cardinals. The junior pitcher threw a three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to earn her ninth win as Plattsburgh took a 4-0 decision from Oneonta.
 
Clarke went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the second game. She finished the day with five hits. Smiddy led the Cardinals with 4 RBIs in the doubleheader while Price scored three runs.
 
Clarke and Brittany Marshall each swiped three bases for Plattsburgh.
 
Rachel Hitt took the loss for Oneonta in the back end of the doubleheader. Hitt surrendered three earned runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out four.
 
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow, hosting New Paltz for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at Cardinal Park.
