CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team (23-8, 12-4 SUNYAC) split a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader with 10
th ranked Cortland (30-6, 13-1 SUNYAC), snapping the Red Dragons 53-game league winning streak in the process. The Cardinals took the first game 6-0, while Cortland notched a 6-1 win in the second game.
The Red Dragons had not lost a regular season SUNYAC game since midway through the 2009 season. In that span they went 53-0-1.
Game One:

The Cardinals scored runs in two of the first three innings to put the Red Dragons on the back foot.
With two runners on base due to errors by the Red Dragons, Michelle Iannone drove Allison Smiddy in to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after one. After a scoreless second inning, Brianna Clarke knocked a sacrifice fly to bring Brittany Marshall home and double the Cardinals lead.
The play remained at 2-0 until the fifth inning when the Cardinals started to open up their lead. Smiddy smacked a two-run homer down the left field line, while Katie McNally did the same thing in the sixth inning to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead that they would not give up.
Ashley Marshall pitched the final five innings of the game to gain the win for the Cardinals, while Lyndsay Rowell suffered the loss for the Red Dragons.
Game Two:

The Red Dragons used three runs in the sixth inning to take away Plattsburgh's opportunity to record the sweep.
Meaghan Kohler and Kayla Lynch each finished 2-for-3 with a homer, double and two RBI and Cassis Kardias was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Abby Martin improved to 11-1 with the win with five and two-thirds innings of five-hit ball. She struck out seven and walked one.
Heather Loughran pitched the first two innings for the Cardinals, giving up two runs and taking the loss. Ashley Marshall gave up four runs in four innings pitched.
The Cardinals will return to action on Thursday when they travel to St. Lawrence for a doubleheader. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
