FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State softball team earned a pair of 9-3 wins to sweep a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Fredonia Saturday afternoon.

In game one, the Cardinals (12-5, 3-1 SUNYAC) trailed 3-0 after four innings but rallied for four runs in the fifth en route to the 9-3 win.

Heather Loughran allowed two earned runs and three hits through the first four innings. Ashley Marshall relieved Loughran in the circle to hold the Blue Devils to just two hits in the final three frames.

Erin Florkiewicz began the comeback in the fifth with a solo home run and Brittany Marshall helped keep the rally going with a two-run double later in the inning.

Brittany Marshall struck again in the sixth with an RBI triple to score Megan Price. Allison Smiddy kept it going with a double to bring Marshall home and later scored on a wild pitch to help the Cardinals put up four more runs.

Errors doomed Fredonia (7-8-1, 1-3 SUNYAC) in game two as four errors led to five unearned Plattsburgh runs.

Ashley Marshall was again dominant in the complete-game victory. Marshall allowed three runs and seven hits while registering eight strikeouts.

The Cardinals plated eight runs before Fredonia was able to push three runs across in the bottom of the third. Plattsburgh tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to round out the offense in the back end of the doubleheader.

Smiddy homered in game two and finished the day with four RBIs. Brittany Marshall also had a nice day for the Cardinals with three hits, two stolen bases, three runs scored and four RBIs in the two games.

Plattsburgh continues conference play Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders. The Cardinals will host Oneonta Friday for their home opener at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader against New Paltz Saturday at noon.
