BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State softball team rolled to a 9-0 win in game one before dropping the second half of a doubleheader, 4-2, at Buffalo State to open its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule.
The Cardinals rattled off 14 hits in the opener while Ashley Marshall limited the Bengals to just three hits through six innings. Marshall walked one and struck out nine in the shutout.
Plattsburgh held a 2-0 lead after four innings, but two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth inning broke the game open. Brianna Clarke led the team with four hits and three runs scored. Erin Florkiewicz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Michelle Iannone added three hits.
In game two, Heather Loughran suffered the loss in the circle after allowing four runs on six hits through 3 1/3 innings. Marshall tossed the final 2 2/3 innings, holding the Bengals to just one hit the rest of the way.
Katie McNally and Megan Price each had two hits for Plattsburgh (10-5, 1-1 SUNYAC). Clarke and Allison Smiddy drove in the two Cardinal runs.
Maddie Coneys earned the win for Buffalo State (6-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) in a complete game performance. Coneys limited Plattsburgh to one earned run on nine hits.
The Cardinals close out the road trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at Fredonia State. First pitch is set for noon.
