COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, a 9-6 decision at Ursinus College in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
The Cardinals found themselves down by four goals before Tommy Kilderry scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter. Nick Travers scored with seven seconds left in the half to bring Plattsburgh within one.
Plattsburgh (3-1) tied the game at 3-all with 13:31 left in the third quarter on Brett McClelland's 10th goal of the year. Joey Kramer assisted on the goal. But the Cardinals were never able to take the lead as Ursinus (4-1) scored the go-ahead goal with 5:02 left in the third and held on for the win.
Ursinus' Dave Kraus scored six goals and added an assist to lead the Bears. Travers and Kramer tallied two points for Plattsburgh while Mike Santisteban added a goal.
While many Plattsburgh games are offense-driven, Tuesday's game was a defensive affair as Ursinus goalkeeper T.J. Magnani made 22 saves to hold the Cardinals under 10 goals for the first time this season. Magnani also picked up six groundballs. Ryan Rindinger made four caused turnover for Ursinus.
Travers scooped up a game-high seven groundballs for Plattsburgh while Mike Lind and Charlie Dullea each caused two turnovers. Gordie Gehring suffered the loss for the Cardinals, recording 11 saves.
Plattsburgh outshot Ursinus, 47-34 but trailed 8-10 in faceoff wins. The Bears finished with 42 groundballs while the Cardinals had 37. Ursinus was 2-for-5 on extra-man opportunites.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday against Ithaca College in Virginia Beach, Va.
