Cardinals Burned, 3-0, by Red Dragons

Jill Tardelli nearly scored a goal in Plattsburgh State's 3-0 loss to Oneonta State on Saturday (Oct. 6).
Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – Looking to turn its season around during its first true SUNYAC road match of 2012, the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team was instead largely shut down in a 3-0 setback to Oneonta State on Saturday (Oct. 6). Offense eluded the visitors for the majority of the match as the Cardinals were only able to accumulate seven shots throughout the one-sided affair.

Plattsburgh State falls to 5-8-0 and 1-3-0 in SUNYAC play with the loss while the Red Dragons improve to 8-3-1 and 4-1-0 in league tilts.

The Red Dragons put pressure on the Cardinals from the opening whistle, and it didn’t take long for the home team to obtain an advantage. In the sixth minute, Melissa Guglielmo scored her first goal of the afternoon, sending a ball to the far corner of the goal and beyond the range of Plattsburgh State keeper Danielle Schmitt.

Things were made more woeful for the Plattsburgh State defensive brigade when Guglielmo struck again in the ninth minute, beating Schmitt once again to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 advantage.  The Red Dragons offense never relented as they fired 19 total shots in the match.

A stout defense erected by the Red Dragons kept Plattsburgh State from producing a single shot until the 26th minute when Olivia Hopeck sent an attempt wide of the opposing goal.

Erica Berry notched the final goal of the contest in the 66th minute when her header beat Schmitt after the two previous shots by the Red Dragons were deflected by the crossbar.

Jill Tardelli nearly broke up the shutout bid in the waning minutes of the game, but her shot in the 87th minute ricocheted off of the crossbar.

Hopeck led the way for the Cardinals, firing two shots in the game – one of which was on target. Emily LaLone and Madeleine Rattray registered the only other two shots on goal of the afternoon for the Cardinals.

Schmitt made eight saves in net while her counterpart Kelley Murphy made three. Once again, the Cardinals were vastly outpaced in corner kicks, this time 10-2.

The Cardinals will return home for their final set of 2012 SUNYAC matches at the Field House Complex. On Friday (Oct. 12), Plattsburgh State plays host to Fredonia State. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
