PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team drew a tough assignment in nationally-ranked No. 18 St. Lawrence, but the Cardinals answered the call, playing the Saints to a 0-0 tie in the regular season finale Wednesday night at the Field House Soccer Complex.
St. Lawrence (12-2-2) maintained possession for much of the first half, but the first solid scoring opportunity came from Plattsburgh State (16-2-1) when Matt Hamilton’s shot at the 31:00 mark hit the left post.
The Cardinals generated another great chance early in the second half when Nick Parrella was able to get around a St. Lawrence defender, but he shot was just wide to the right of the net as the teams battled on.
The Saints began to lay on the pressure late in regulation, but were still unable to get on the board. With 18 minutes left in the second half, St. Lawrence’s Jamal Samaroo ripped a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped just in front of the goal line. Saints sophomore Mark Provost picked up the rebound but was denied by Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington to keep the game scoreless.
Plattsburgh’s Fabian Chaparro also came up with a few good opportunities in the second half. Chaparro took a pass and played the ball up the right side of the field. The Cardinal freshman tried to play the ball forward to set up a cross pass, but his touch had a bit too much behind it and the ball rolled over the end line.
Chaparro had another chance at 78:35 as the ball made its way to him at the top of the box, but his shot sailed high of the net.
St. Lawrence had the best chance in overtime when Brian Gilloran’s shot in the 98
th minute was stopped by a diving Heighington, sending the game to a second overtime session.
Despite being whistled for six fouls in the second overtime, the Cardinals were able to keep the Saints at bay and ending the game in a draw.
The Saints held a 10-3 advantage in shots while Plattsburgh had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Heighington continues to add to his all-time shutout record as Wednesday’s shutouts marks the 33
rd of his career. The Cardinal senior made four saves and finished the regular season with an 11-2-1 record.
Saints’ goalkeeper Nate Goss-Woliner did make a save in Wednesday’s non-conference matchup.
The Cardinals enter the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs as the top seed. Plattsburgh has a first-round bye before hosting either No. 5 Geneseo or No. 4 Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
