Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Although it held an advantage in shots and corner kicks, the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team was unable to parlay its statistical edges to a SUNYAC victory as the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 25-ranked Brockport on Saturday (Oct. 20).
With the loss, the Cardinals wrap up their 2012 league slate with a mark of 2-6-1 while their overall record falls to 6-10-1. The league-leading Golden Eagles improved to 14-1-2 and 7-1-1 in conference tilts.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first on their senior day as Katie Gildemeyer sent a ball over the head of Plattsburgh State keeper Danielle Schmitt at the 14:40 mark. The marker came on Brockport’s first shot of the contest.
Despite being placed in an early 1-0 hole, the Cardinals controlled the majority of the half, outshooting their SUNYAC foes 6-1 through the first half hour of the game.
Gildemeyer, though, made the most of the limited chances Brockport was afforded as she struck again late in the 34
th minute with her seventh goal of 2012. After Devin McMahon fired a shot on goal, the Golden Eagles rushed down the field and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and ricocheted out to Gildemeyer who put home the rebound.
The Cardinals got off three more shots in the first stanza, but none found their way past Brockport keeper Hannah Conine.
Lauren Gonyea cut the Plattsburgh State deficit in half at the 58-minute mark, scoring her second goal of 2012 with a hard shot over the head of Conine. From there, the Brockport defense buckled down, allowing only four more shots by the Cardinls through the remainder of the contest. None of those shots were on target.
Brockport was hit with a pair of offsides citations – both occurring in the deciding frame. Plattsburgh owned a 15-10 advantage in shots with six shots on goal. The Cardinals had five corner kicks to Brockport’s two in the game as well.
Kristie Pageau had four shots to lead the Cardinals, one of which was on goal. Both of Gonyea’s attempts were on target while McMahon and Emily LaLone each accumulated three shots.
