BUFFALO, N.Y. – Steve Zacharczyk scored a goal in each half to help the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team top Buffalo State, 4-1, and complete a weekend sweep in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
Matt Hamilton got the Cardinals going early with an unassisted goal at the 13:50 mark for his eighth of the year. Hamilton’s indirect kick found the back of the net to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Zacharczyk tallied the eventual game-winner in the 31
st minute to put the Cardinals up by two. Zacharczyk took a feed from Nick Parrella before beating Buffalo State goalkeeper Ian Huntoon in a one-on-one matchup.
Plattsburgh State took the 2-0 lead into the second half until Parrella took a shot from 20 yards out that dropped in behind the Bengals’ keeper for the Cardinals’ third goal of the afternoon. Jarred Antonucci was credited with an assist on Parrella’s fifth of the year.
The Bengals answered back in the 67
th minute when C.J. Scirto outlasted a Cardinal defender, turned and fired a shot past Plattsburgh goalkeeper Zack Kruizenga.
Zacharczyk put the game away at 80:51 with an unassisted goal to make it 4-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh outshot Buffalo State, 19-5, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kruizenga made three saves to improve to 5-0-0. Huntoon recorded eight stops in the loss for the Bengals.
The Cardinals, who have won five-straight games, improve to 15-1-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh still remains in a first-place tie in the conference standings with Brockport, who defeated Oswego, 5-1, Saturday afternoon. With two games remaining on the conference schedule, the Cardinals can finish no lower than third.
With the loss, Buffalo State was eliminated from postseason contention, dropping to 1-12-1 on the year and 0-6-1 in conference play.
Plattsburgh State returns home next weekend to begin a three-game homestand to wrap up the regular season. The Cardinals host Geneseo on Friday at 3 p.m. before a pivotal SUNYAC matchup on Saturday against Brockport at 2 p.m. The regular season wraps up on Wednesday, Oct. 24 when Plattsburgh hosts St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. All games will take place at the Field House Soccer Complex.
