Women's Basketball Loses in Dying Seconds 68-69

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team (7-10, 4-7 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Cortland (12-7, 7-5 SUNYAC) 69-68 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Memorial Hall Saturday.

Brittany Cohen sank two free throws with five seconds remaining in the game to put the Red Dragons up by one and the Cardinals failed to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Plattsburgh were down by 11 points at the half, but came out quickly and cut the deficit to three points with just 2:40 gone in the second half.  The Red Dragons then went on a 13-2 run over a 3:47 span to push their lead back up to 15 points. The

Cardinals embarked on a run of their own moments later when two Kathleen Payne free throws capped 22-5 run to give them the lead.

The two teams traded shots for the remainder of the game and this resulted in seven lead changes in the last 7 minutes of the game.

Lindsey Larivee scored eight points in the last 3:35 to keep the Cardinals in the lead with nine seconds remaining, until Cohen drew a foul.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, while the Red Dragons shot 34.4 percent over the same period.

Kathleen Payne scored 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting and added nine rebounds. Brittany Marshall notched 14 points and five rebounds, Larivee hit 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Brooke Reifinger scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Cohen led the Red Dragons with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Megan Maycumber added 12 points after going 5-for-8 from the field and Molly Byrne notched 11 points, going 3-of-5 from three point range.

The Cardinals return to SUNYAC action Tuesday when they hit the road to take on Oneonta at 6 p.m.
