MIDDLEBURY, VT. – The Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team (6-9, 3-6 SUNYAC) dropped a tight game 77-74 at Middlebury College (5-11, 0-5 NESCAC) Tuesday.
The Cardinals were tied with just 53 seconds left in the game, but the Panthers nailed five consecutive free throws to seal the game.
The game was tied, 37-37, at the half. The Panthers came out the stronger of the two teams and led by 11 points with 15:23 left in the game. The Cardinals began to surge back and a steal by Kathleen Payne led to a Brooke Reifinger layup to tie the game with 1:40 left. Brooke Reifinger then grabbed a steal of her own on the next possession and the Cardinals gained a pair of foul shots. Kerri Salisbury nailed both of them to give the Cardinals a two point lead at the 1:16 mark.
The Panthers regained their lead when Sarah Marcus scored a layup and drained a free throw after drawing a foul on the play. From there the Panthers saw the game out from the line.
Kathleen Payne recorded another double-double for the Cardinals. Payne tied her career-high for points with 32 and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss. Brooke Reifinger scored nine points on 3-for-9 shooting and Dana Nucaro scored eight points and snatched four rebounds.
The Panthers were led by Scarlett Kirk who scored 20 points including going 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Tracy Borsinger added 15 points, Marcus notched 11 points and Kristina Conroy hit 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
The Cardinals will host a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference games this coming weekend. Friday will see the Cardinals take on Oswego State at 6 p.m. and Saturday SUNY Cortland visit Memorial Hall at 2 p.m.
