Plattsburgh Women Post 2-0 Shutout in Cardinal Classic Championship

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y
. – The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team scored twice in first half en route to a 2-0 shutout of Endicott College to claim the 2011 Cardinal Classic Championship.

Kayla Rabideau blasted a shot to the left side at 16:52 to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.

Kristie Pageau tallied her second goal of the tournament in the 29th minute, beating Endicott goalkeeper Natalie Wyrsch to find the back of the net.  Pageau also assisted on Plattsburgh’s first goal of the game.

The Cardinals held a 15-7 edge in shots and a slight 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.  

Wyrsch and Plattsburgh keeper Danielle Schmitt recorded four saves apiece.  The victory marks Schmitt’s first as a Cardinal.

Plattsburgh improves to 1-0-1 for the season, while Endicott drops to 1-1-0.

Pageau was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Plattsburgh defender Kaitlin Graeb was recognized at the Defensive Most Valuable Player.

Emily LaLone represented the Cardinals on the All-Tournament Team while Endicott’s Caitlin Peters and Sarah Person also received All-Tournament honors.  Nazareth’s Sarah Eichelberger and Nicole Strieker of UW-Oshkosh were recognized following the consolation game.

The Cardinals hit the road on Thursday, September 8 for a non-conference game at Castleton State.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Nazareth – 1, UW-Oshkosh – 0

Nazareth College (1-0-1) and UW-Oshkosh (0-2-0) battled into the final minutes of play before Elizabeth Howell tallied the lone goal of the game at 85:09 from Christine Belding.

Nazareth outshot the Titans, 10-4, and corner kicks were even with two apiece.

Abbie Carey made one stop for the Golden Flyers, while Katie Berkopec recorded four saves in the loss.
