PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Steve Zacharczyk’s goal with 1:25 left in overtime lifted the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over the MCLA Trailblazers as the Cardinals claim the 2011 Cardinal Classic Championship.
Tom Greene, who was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player, opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the 76th minute of the game. Trailblazers goalkeeper Dillon Wager came out to play the Pat Shaughnessy’s rebound, but Greene was able to bury the rebound to give Plattsburgh a late 1-0 lead.
With 24 seconds left in regulation, Robert Dalby evened the score at 1-1 with his first of the year, an unassisted goal from deep in the box.
Wager made eight saves in the loss for MCLA, while Plattsburgh goalie Andy Heighington stopped two shots.
The Cardinals, who improve to 2-0, held the edge in both shots (19-6) and corner kicks (10-3). The Trailblazers drop to 1-1 on the year.
Plattsburgh’s Erik Hakim was named Defensive Most Valuable Player, while Shaughnessy and newcomer Nate Economou rounded out the Cardinal contingent of the All-Tournament Team.
Wager and Jacob McCall represented MCLA on the All-Tournament Team, while Skidmore’s Diego Reinero was also recognized.
Plattsburgh will return home on Wednesday, September 7 to host the Norwich Cadets. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Field House Soccer Complex.
Skidmore – 2, St. Joseph’s - 0
Marcus Goldbas recorded two assists as Skidmore College defeated St. Joseph’s College 2-0 in Saturday’s Cardinal Classic afternoon game at the Field House Complex. The Thoroughbreds earn their first win of the season and move to 1-1 while the Golden Eagles drop to 0-2.
St. Joseph’s threatened early when Mike Anglim picked up a lob pass and raced in uncontested against Skidmore goalkeeper Nick Peterson. Peterson smothered Anglim’s shot and the Thoroughbred defense cleared out the ball from the penalty area. Anglim’s fourth minute attack would be the Golden Eagles’ only shot on net for the remainder of the game.
Two minutes after the stifled breakaway, Goldbas sent a free kick into the penalty area that was headed in by Brock Bakewell. Skidmore built on the early strike with another goal in the 16th minute by Aaron Krepack. Goldbas fired a pass across the penalty area that Krepack headed into the net.
Skidmore controlled the ball for much of the game, only no shots on net over the final 74 minutes. The Thoroughbreds’ defense was able to win races to the ball and take possession on corner and free kicks.
Peterson recorded a shutout by stopping one shot while Chris Muhns suffered the loss by allowing two goals on nine shots.
