PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team struggled to convert numerous offensive opportunities Saturday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 tie against the Potsdam Bears in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) home opener.
The Cardinals’ (7-0-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) best opportunity of the first half came on a cross by Sean Murphy which glided right in front of Potsdam goalie Joe Glackin and just out of the reach of a charging Jarred Antonucci. Antonucci was unable to get a foot on the ball, which sailed wide of the net.
While the Cardinals continued to apply pressure on the Bears in the second half, Plattsburgh keeper Andy Heighington kept the Bears (3-4-2, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) off the board with a big save in the 74th minute of play. Potsdam’s A.J. Ramirez ripped a high shot that Heighington was able to get a glove on to keep the shutout in tact.
Shots were a lopsided 34-17 in Plattsburgh’s favor. The Cardinals also took 17 corner kicks while the Bears had four.
Glackin finished the day with eight saves for the Bears. Heighington recorded three stops for the Cardinals in his fifth shutout.
Plattsburgh won the penalty kick shootout, 5-3, which is used as the first tiebreaker between teams to determine seedings for the SUNYAC tournament.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday against Lyndon State in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. at the Field House Soccer Complex. Members of the team will wear pink jersey to raise awareness for breast cancer. The team will also conduct a raffle for various prizes, including Plattsburgh State apparel, with all proceeds benefiting the Treasure Chests Fund of the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center at CVPH.
