PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2011) - Four different Cardinals found the back of the net as the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team defeated the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles, 4-0, in their first game of the 2011 Cardinal Classic Tournament.
Sophomore Steve Zacharczyk notched the Cardinals’ first goal at 31:28 on a header off a corner kick by Nick Parrella, giving Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead at the half.
Senior forward Pat Shaughnessy tallied his first goal of the season in the 51st minute with an assist to Tom Greene. Plattsburgh stretched its lead to 3-0 at 72:42 when Jarred Antonucci beat Golden Eagles goaltender Chris Muhs on a penalty kick.
Freshman Sean Murphy was credited with the fourth Cardinal goal, which deflected off a St. Joseph’s player in front of the net.
The Cardinals dominated in all aspects of the game, owning a 32-3 edge is shots and a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Andy Heighington recorded his first victory in net for Plattsburgh, making two saves. Muhs recorded six saves during 74 minutes in the St. Joseph’s goal. Michael Pitts finished the game for the Golden Eagles, stopping three shots and allowing one goal.
Plattsburgh improves to 1-0-0 with the victory, while St. Joseph’s drops to 0-1-0.
Cardinal Classic action continues tomorrow with the Skidmore Thoroughbreds taking on St. Joseph’s at 5 p.m. The Cardinals wrap up the evening as they host the MCLA Trailblazers at 7:30 p.m.

Jake McCall's goal in the 62nd minute of play secured the win for MCLA in a close match-up against the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in the first game of the 2011 Cardinal Classic.
McCall beat Skidmore goalkeeper Nick Peterson when he knocked a ball out of the air and into the net off of a corner kick by Robert Dalby.
Despite suffering the loss, Skidmore dominated much of the play with a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 14-3 edge in corner kicks.
Brock Bakewell led the way for the Thoroughbreds with four shots while Mark Jensen followed with three.
Peterson recorded two saves in the loss. Trailblazers goalie Dillon Wager made two stops to earn his first win of the season.
