CORTLAND, N.Y. – Allison Smiddy’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth gave the Plattsburgh State softball team all it would need in a 1-0 win over the Fredonia State Blue Devils at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament.
Ashley Marshall (18-5) was in the circle for Plattsburgh, scattering seven hits and striking out 10 in a complete-game shutout.
Ashley LaPorta (5-3) gave the Blue Devils a solid outing, allowing one run on four hits in six inning of work.
Smiddy went 2-for-2 with the home run – her second in as many days. Nicole Diemer and Dana Mandery were the only other Cardinals to pick up hits.
With the loss, Fredonia is eliminated from the tournament, wrapping up their season with a 26-9 record.
The Cardinals (32-7) will continue tournament play tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Buffalo State, who suffered a 9-1 loss to Cortland Friday.
