PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team appeared to be in line for a split of Friday’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader, but SUNY Cortland rallied for eight runs in the seventh inning of game two to complete the sweep of the Cardinals. The Red Dragons took game one, 6-1, before their 8-6 come-from-behind win in game two.
The Cardinals fall to 28-6 on the year and 12-3 in the SUNYAC. Cortland improves to 30-3 overall and 15-0 in conference play.
The Red Dragons hit three home runs in game one off of Plattsburgh’s Ashley Marshall. Marshall dropped to 15-4 after allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits.
The Cardinals struggled at the plate against Cortland standout Lyndsay Rowell. Rowell allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven batters.
Megan Price drove home the only Plattsburgh run in the first game, knocking a solo home run to left field in the second inning.
Plattsburgh drilled two more home runs in the second game, accounting for all six Cardinal runs. Allison Smiddy had a two-run home run in the second inning and Brianna Clarke smacked a grand slam to center in the fifth.
Heather Loughran seemed in control, holding the Red Dragons scoreless over the first six innings, but everything unraveled in the seventh.
Cortland plated all eight runs in the top of the seventh, punctuated by Abby Martin’s go-ahead three-run home run.
Loughran finished the day allowing six earned runs on 13 hits, suffering her second loss of the season.
Morgan Kuhn started game two for Cortland, giving up six runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Martin was credited for the win, holding the Cardinals to one hit in the final three innings.
Clarke finished the afternoon going 2-for-5 with four RBI for the Cardinals, while Megan Price went 5-for-7.
Martin was the star at the plate for the Red Dragons, going 3-for-8 with a home run in each end of the doubleheader. Donnalyn Cross and Meaghan Kohler each rapped four hits for Cortland.
Plattsburgh will look to rebound tomorrow as they host Oswego State for the final two games of the regular season. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Cardinal Park.
