PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The national ranked no. 13 Plattsburgh State softball team swept a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against Fredonia State, winning both games by a final score of 4-1.
The Cardinals improve to 21-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Blue Devils fall to 18-6 on the year and 6-4 in the SUNYAC.
In game one, Nikki Diemer gave the Cardinals an early leading, scoring on an error by the catcher in the bottom of the first. Later in the same inning, Brianna Clarke doubled to right center, driving home Kayla Rabideau to put Plattsburgh up by two.
The Cardinals picked up another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when Brianna Clarke scored on a ball that went the legs of both the Fredonia third baseman and left fielder.
Plattsburgh tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Allison Smiddy.
Ashley Marshall, who improves 11-2, did not allow a hit until the seventh inning when she ran into some trouble. With two outs and the bases loaded, Fredonia’s Hannah Vesneske drove home a run on a single through the right side. That would be the only run Marshall would surrender as she was able to record the final out and work out of the jam. Marshall finished the day with eight strikeouts.
Jennifer Tighe suffered the loss for the Blue Devils, allowing five hits and four runs – two of which were earned. She walked five and struck out five.
In game two, the Cardinals jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Plattsburgh scored a run in the first on an RBI single from Katie McNally. The Cardinals added three more runs in the second as Clarke singled to drive home two and McNally knocked an RBI double to right field, rounding out the Plattsburgh offense.
Heather Loughran (10-1) started the second game for the Cardinals, giving up five hits, one run and five walks while striking out four in six innings of work.
With the tying run at the plate in the top of seventh, Marshall came on in relief to throw a scoreless inning and record her sixth save of the season.
Plattsburgh returns to action tomorrow against Buffalo State for a SUNYAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Cardinal Park.
