GENESEO, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team got the first basket of the game, but that was the last lead the Cardinals would get as they fell to Geneseo Saturday afternoon, 77-48. Geneseo led by as much as 32 late in the game.
With the win, Geneseo maintained its stranglehold on first place in the conference, now at a perfect 13-0 in SUNYAC play and 18-2 overall. The loss is Plattsburgh’s sixth in a row, as the Cardinals fall to 6-13, 3-10 in the SUNYAC.
Geneseo took over the lead at 4-2 just a few minutes into the game and went into halftime with a nine-point lead at 27-18. They did not relinquish the lead through the rest of the game. The Blue Knights put it in overdrive in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals, 50-30, while shooting a lights out 62.1 percent from the field to secure the win.
Kathleen Payne led the Cardinals with 10 points 16 minutes off the bench. Taylor Amarando was the Cardinals’ leading rebounder with eight and also pitched in three assists. While Kerri Salisbury was the Cardinals’ second-leading scorer with nine points.
Geneseo won the turnover battle, forcing 27 Cardinal turnovers and compiling 15 steals. The Blue Knights turned the ball over 15 times. Geneseo's Brittany Finkle was the game’s leading scorer, dropping 16 points. Alyssa Polosky and Melissa Graham had 14 apiece.
The Cardinals next hit the floor against Oswego State Friday, Feb. 11, at Memorial Hall. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
