NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team found itself tied after the first half with the Norwich Cadets, but the Cardinals shot 15-for-28 from the field in the second half to roll to a 73-56 win in the 2011-12 season opener.
Sophomore Kathleen Payne shot 9-for-22, leading the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding with 20 points and nine boards. Brooke Reifinger and Lindsey Larivee also hit double-digits, scoring 11 points apiece. Catherine Cassidy finished the night with a team-best eight assists while going 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Newcomer Jalen Hart grabbed seven rebounds in her Cardinal debut.
Karissa Doyon set the tone for the Norwich offense with the only double-double of the night, netting a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Aliah Curry followed with 12 points for the Cadets.
The Cardinals (1-0) outscored the Cadets (0-1) in the second half, 41-24. Plattsburgh shot 48.4 percent from the field overall and hit 10-of-16 from the charity stripe, including nine of 13 in the second half.
Plattsburgh will have to wait another two weeks before its next game as St. Lawrence is slated to make the trip to Memorial Hall on Nov. 29 for the Cardinals' home opener.
