NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — Despite holding the Hawks to only 16 second-half points, a 22-point first half deficit was simply too big to overcome as the Plattsburgh State women’s basketball team fell on the road at New Paltz, 60-48.
The Cardinals (6-10, 3-7 SUNYAC) went into the locker room at halftime down, 44-22, to the second place New Paltz Hawks (11-7, 9-2 SUNYAC). The Hawks shot a 48.6 perecent in the first half including 4-for-9 from the three-point line to build up a commanding lead and double up the Cardinals.
The Cardinal defense was able to cool the New Paltz shooters in the second half, holding the Hawks only 5-for 25-from the floor, but the Cardinals only got untracked in the last 5:25 of the game when they outscored New Paltz 11-0 to close out the game.
Three freshmen led the way for the Cardinal scoring. Lindsey Larivee (Enosburg, Vt.), Catherine Cassidy (Brooklyn), and Dana Nucaro (Valhalla) each had seven points. Larivee also added five steals. Junior forward Nora Campbell (Miller Place) led the way on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds.
New Paltz junior Zoe Cohen led all scorers with 12 points.
The Cardinals resume action at home on Tuesday Feb. 1 against the Potsdam Bears in Memorial Hall at 6 p.m.
