PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Two-time All-American Bart Misiak scored his first goal of the season with 6 minutes remaining in the second overtime as Plattsburgh State eked out a 1-0 sudden-victory Wednesday against Castleton State in non-conference men's soccer action at the Field House Complex.
The host Cardinals, who haven't allowed a goal at home for the last 723 minutes and 35 seconds, improve to 5-0-1. The Spartans fall to 2-3.
The game-winning goal was set up by a corner kick. Chris Taylor's delivery found Misiak, who came up from his back position, about 10 yards out and he headed the shot high into the left corner of the net. That was Misiak's first goal since his freshman year of 2007.
Taylor moved into a three-way tie with Mark Misiak (2003-06) and Malcolm Gatherer (1996-99)
for fourth place on Plattsburgh's career assists list with 28.
Both teams had plenty of chances to win the game in regulation. Plattsburgh had the first solid opportunity in the 7th minute when Nate Koenemann made a diving stop to his left on a curling blast by Pat Shaughnessy. Then 17 minutes later, Taylor hit the crossbar from 22 yards out. The Spartans nearly got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute when Josh Costa was stymied by Andy Heighington (4-0-1 record) at close range.
Despite the slim result, Plattsburgh dominated the contest with ball possession, territorial advantage, shots (27-9) and corner kicks (14-5). Koenemann finished with seven saves while Heighington earned his fourth shutout of the season.
October 20 of last year, during a 1-1 draw with Union (N.Y.), was the last time that the Cardinals gave up a goal at home.
