Fourth-Straight Split at Home for the Cardinals

Erin Jamieson led the Cardinals at the plate against New Paltz
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State softball team recorded its fourth-straight split at home this season when it shutout State University of New York Athletic Conference opponent New Paltz, 7-0, in game one and then fell to the Hawks, 6-7, in game two.

The Cardinals are now 19-11 for the season, 8-5 in the SUNYAC, while the Hawks are 17-13 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

The first game began on April 16, but was halted in the bottom of the first inning due to rain. Therefore, Erin Florkiewicz stepped to the plate with a fresh count and the bases loaded full of Cardinals with two outs on the board at the start of competition this morning.

Florkiewicz made the most of the situation and crushed a double to center field, scoring all three base runners. Dana Mandery flew out to center during the next at-bat to end the inning, but the damage was already done.

Plattsburgh would add three more runs in the bottom of the second inning and another in the fifth to further solidify its lead. The run in the fifth was scored by Ashley Napear when Amy Woo knocked a triple to right. It was Woo's fourth triple of the year, just one shy of her single-season career-high set in 2007.

Ashley Marshall (14-4) earned the shutout after allowing only three hits and striking out a personal best 14 batters. Marshall would also suffer the loss in game two after taking over duties in the circle for Heather Loughran in the fourth.

New Paltz struck first in game two, Jillian Gallagher crossed the plate when Melyssa Cilmi ripped a single through the left side.

It took an inning, but Plattsburgh answered back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Mandery doubled to right, allowing two runs to score, and Katie McNally picked up an RBI when she grounded out to the first baseman and Florkiewicz snuck in from third.

The Hawks tied the game, 3-3, when they scored twice in the third, but the Cardinals pulled ahead once more with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The game would get quiet in the fourth and fifth innings, but Plattsburgh increased its lead to two runs in the sixth. Nicole Diemer singled up the middle with two outs to drive in Mandery.

New Paltz came back with a vengeance, however, in the seventh. The Hawks plated four runs, only one earned, to pull ahead of Plattsburgh for the final time, 7-5.

Erin Jamieson did her best to spark a rally when she led off the bottom of the seventh for Plattsburgh with a single. She then stole second and scored on a hit to center by Danielle Gjergji. Unfortunately, some unlucky at-bats would leave two Cardinals on the bases and New Paltz with the win.

Overall for the day, Jamieson led the Cardinals with three hits and three runs. Florkiewicz, though only producing one hit in seven at-bats, topped the team with three RBI.
