CORTLAND, N.Y.-- Nationally No. 4-ranked Cortland raced to an 8-1 lead after the first quarter en route to a 25-7 victory Saturday over visiting Plattsburgh State in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action at Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the SUNYAC while the Cardinals fall to 10-5 and 1-3 in the conference.
Kyle Norchi led Plattsburgh with two goals and
Luke Weidlein added two assists.
Pete Morgan,
Joe Kramer,
Tommy Kilderry,
Luke Flegar and
Brandon Smith also scored for the Cardinals.
Mike Tota and Chris DeLuca each tallied four goals apiece for the Red Dragons, who had 14 players score at least one goal.
Plattsburgh scored four goals in the second to pull within 13-5 at the halftime break, but the Red Dragons outscored the Cardinals in the second half, 12-2, to seal the win.
Cortland also dominated the statistical sheet: 71 to 36 in ground balls, 24 to 11 in face-off wins and 58 to 24 in shots.
"When you add up the differences in ground balls, face-offs and our failed clears, that's 58 more possessions. That was the difference in the game because Cortland had possession 75 percent of the time," Cardinals coach P.J. Kavanagh said after the game. "When we had the ball, we scored. When they had it most of the time, they capitalized."
